City driving can wreak havoc on the fuel economy of your vehicle. The main offenders here are idling and accelerating. It cannot be avoided, at least on most days and especially during rush hour, but there are some things you can do to lessen the damage done to your fuel economy. First, when you are idling, try to keep your air conditioning or heat off. These tasks make your engine run a little harder, thus taking more fuel than if they were off.

Secondly, when you accelerate, do so slowly. Do not pretend you’re on a race track and trying to beat the driver beside you to the next red light. This takes more fuel than necessary, puts more wear on your engine than need be and you will probably just end up idling again at the next red light anyway. These two tips will help a great deal in you saving gas.
